Your shoulder clicks when you lift your arm or reach into your back pocket.
You press a ball against your shoulder blade against the wall, massage your tight neck, or perhaps go for a deep tissue massage. For a moment, it feels lighter... but after a few hours or the next day, the feeling of stiffness and stabbing returns to the exact same spot.
1. Why Massage and Foam Rolling Alone Often Fail to Provide Lasting Relief
Massage or foam rolling are great tools – they reduce tissue tension, improve local circulation, and give the nervous system a signal to temporarily relax. However, they primarily treat the symptom, not the root cause. The symptom, not the root cause
If your shoulder blade is stabbing and your shoulder is clicking, it means that your shoulder girdle is operating in compensation. It has to make up for a lack of mobility or stability in a completely different part of your body. By massaging only the shoulder blade, you strip the body of its defense mechanism without giving it anything in return. As a result, the nervous system quickly restores protective tension in response to the lack of stability.
2. Where to Look for the Real Cause? When the Upper Body Compensates for the Lower Body
As you know from my previous posts, where I referred to fascial work and a systemic approach to health, our body does not consist of separate blocks. It is an integrated network of myofascial lines and the nervous system, where everything works together.
Why, then, do the shoulder and shoulder blade suffer?
- The influence of breathing and the diaphragm: When you live in constant tension, experience discomfort in the lower abdomen (e.g., with endometriosis or painful periods), or habitually tense your stomach, your breathing becomes shallow. The diaphragm does not work through its full range, and the burden of breathing is taken over by auxiliary respiratory muscles in the neck and chest
- The connection to the pelvis and torso: The pelvis is your foundation. If it lacks freedom of movement, hip mobility, or stabilization, the spine and shoulder blade must shift their positioning to maintain balance.
Mindful work with habits and the nervous system: The state of the nervous system directly translates into muscle tone. Chronic stress or inflammation causes the body to seek protective positions. Instead of constantly fighting the symptom and pressing on painful points, it is worth introducing mindful movement re-education that gives the nervous system a sense of security.
From Rolling to Movement – How Can I Help You
Massage or self-myofascial release can be a great introduction – opening a so-called "window of opportunity." However, real and lasting change happens through properly selected movement:
- Regaining breathing space: We release the chest and breath to take the overload off the neck and upper back.
- Working with the foundation: We restore mobility in the pelvis and hips, creating a stable and balanced base for the torso.
- Strengthening and re-educating patterns: We retrain the shoulder blade to glide correctly over the ribs, signaling to the muscles that they are safe and can function without clicking.
If you have been pressing a ball into the same shoulder blade for weeks and see no lasting improvement – stop fighting only the site of pain.
I invite you to make a conscious choice to find the root cause of your ailments together. We will select movements that will bring you lasting relief.
