Shoulder Pain with 40 Around the Corner. Why Exactly Now?

Turning forty is a symbolic moment for many of us when the body begins to "protest." While it is easy to blame it on the calendar, the root cause usually lies in biological changes combined with decades of specific habits.

Why Is the 40-Year Threshold a Turning Point?

After the age of 40, our body begins to undergo natural physiological processes that require us to be more conscious in taking care of our musculoskeletal system:

  • Decreased tissue elasticity: With age, collagen production drops, and our fascia and tendons become less flexible. What our body used to forgive in our 20s during hours of poor posture now becomes a cause of micro-injuries and inflammation after 40.
  • Accumulation of habits (the so-called "movement debt"): Shoulder pain in a 40-year-old is often the result of 20 years of sedentary work. This is not a problem that appeared yesterday – it is the effect of long-term overload resulting from our posture at a desk, in front of a computer, or behind the wheel.
  • Changes in recovery: Our body simply needs more time to recover. If we have ignored tension signals around the shoulder blades or neck for decades, the body after 40 starts sending warning signals in the form of pain that can no longer be just "walked off" or ignored.

Sedentary Lifestyle and the "Shoulder Trap"

Many of my clients spend an average of 8–10 hours a day at a desk. At this age, the body stops effectively compensating for this inactivity. Sitting causes our body to "stiffen up."

HabitImpact on the Shoulder
Long hours working on a laptopShortening of the chest muscles and contractures around the shoulders.
Lack of postural varietyLoss of natural mobility of the shoulder blade relative to the rib cage.
Working under stressHabitually shrugging shoulders toward the ears (tension in the upper traps), which "freezes" the shoulders.

Does It Really Have to Stay This Way?

Understanding that your body needs a slightly different approach after 40 than it did in your youth – one that is more conscious and not just focused on body shape (although that is a nice side effect of regular physical activity) – is the key to getting rid of the discomfort.
